A-WOO-WOO! I cheated on Sephora.

Well, it has happened.  I've found a place that is like Disney World to makeup lovers.  Warning:  if you're not an Atlantan or in the 'burbs close by, this post won't apply to you as much as others.  However, I would still definitely recommend reading on so you can at least enjoy my usual witty commentary.   Wait --- I just remembered this applies to Nashvillians, too!

A few friends had told me of a lil' place in Buckhead (for non-ATLers, this is a neighborhood in the northern portion of the city) called Woo Skincare and Cosmetics.  You'd think since I am so loyal to good ol' Sephora that I wouldn't give this spot a second thought, but I decided to check it out anyways.  What I found is the Mecca of all cosmetics stores.  Holy monkey balls; this place is amazing.  Here's why:

1.  They aren't diluted with too many products (which --- WARNING! SACRILEGE! --- Sephora has a tendency to be).  They only carry 11 cosmetics lines, including 3 of my Big Five:  Trish McEvoy, Bobbi Brown, and Laura Mercier.  **YSL is in there too, but I don't work with that line often.  Any input would be appreciated**    Post-Script:  the other 2 of my Big Five are Dior and Bare Minerals.

2.  They sell the ENTIRE line of Moroccan Oil products.  Enough said.

3.  The consultants there are super cute and have awesome style and classy makeup.  I'm not ashamed to admit it.  I buy more things from cute, put-together people.  There, I said it.

4.  They have awesome events!  They'll have makeup artists from the different lines come for parties every now and then.  Also, this whole month (December), they are running "Woo Bucks."  You get 10% of every penny you spend as "Woo Bucks" to spend in the month of January.  Example:  today I spent $180 on stoof, and I got $18 in Bucks.  That means I basically have an $18 gift certificate to use next month.  That's a tube of lipstick or a Trish eye color!

So, my conclusion is as follows:  if you're in Atlanta or Nashville and you want some great makeup, skincare, and/or haircare with some great advice to go with, head to Woo.  And if you're wondering what I might want for Christmas, it's a giftcard to the Buckhead location.  Thank you.

Peace!

Back from the dead --- and looking fabulous

So I've been off-grid for waaaay too long, and I need to apologize.  It's been a little nuts in the World of Meredith the past month, so my b for leaving everyone starving for cosmetic knowledge.  Also, I have to admit that while I've been on my lil' blogging hiatus, I've gone off-grid in another way as well:  I've been wearing something other than Bare Minerals foundation.  Cue the collective GAAAASP!!!!

I'd noticed some of my friends' skin looking rather smashing lately, and it turns out there was a common thread:  Diorskin Airflash spray foundation.  I'm already on the Dior train when it comes to mascara (see previous post about the Mighty Trio), but their foundation is totally new to me.  I saddled up to the Dior counter at Nordstrom and drilled the lady with some questions.  I also did the unthinkable:  I let her take my makeup off and completely re-apply it.  (I literally NEVER let anyone do my makeup...)  What I ended up with was a bag full of Dior makeup and a $300 hole in my bank account, but that's neither here nor there.

Obviously, I was smitten with Airflash.  It's sort of amazing.  I don't use it every day, because it has a bit more coverage than I prefer on a daily basis.  I use it for weddings and other events where I want that Hollywood "OMG, have you been airbrushed?" look.  To apply this bit of happiness in a can, you just need a flat, soft foundation brush.  Blending is key:  you only need a spray or two on the brush at a time, and you need to blend it until it's dry.  Here's my little trick for my grease-prone friends:  I dab a tad of Bare Minerals Mineral Veil on my t-zone to keep the shine off.  One more tip for new users:  make sure you make a trip to the makeup counter (not Sephora for this one --- you need a Dior pro) to have your color matched exactly.  It took a few tries to get mine just right.

*Shout-out to Krissy for being my first friend to embrace the Diorskin phenomenon.  You're my muse!

I'm not going to share a link to buy online, because I'm really serious about going to get your color matched.  Happy airbrushing!!!

GASP!!! An alternative to "Well Rested"

I had this question posted as a comment, and I've actually gotten the same query more than once. Instead of just responding to the comment, I decided it was new-post-worthy. Look out!

Here's the conundrum:

I need to change the concealer I'm using to tackle the lovely genetic dark circles that seem determined to hang out under my eyes. I have very thin, translucent skin and the concealers I've tried just aren't hacking it. I still look tired even when I'm not. Got any suggestions?!

Here's my suggestion, which, let's be honest, is usually correct. But we can talk about my ego problems later:

While I've always been a huge fan of Bare Minerals "Well Rested" mineral powder concealer, it seems not to work as well for folks with thinner undereye skin.  So I got all detective at Sephora and went investigatin'.  My super duper find? Laura Mercier "Undercover Pot" concealer. It's great because it's basically a 3-part concealer in one little pot. The top of the container is home to two cream concealers: a thinner cream, and a thicker, more yellow-toned version of the first.

Use the thinner, peachier-toned cream for undereye circles, being careful not to create that 'reverse raccoon-eye' effect where you make a bright circle directly under your eyes. To avoid this, blend the concealer lower, working it into the sides of your nose and even partly onto your upper cheek. After applying the cream (with a concealer brush; see previous post on brushes), unscrew the bottom of the pot for a surprise. I love surprises!! This smart little product hides a thin powder in the bottom that you will want to use to sweep over your cream concealer. This sets the cream and also keeps it from settling into creases.

Now what to do with that thicker, more yellow cream? That stuff is awesome for red spots and blemishes. It's too thick and yellow for dark circles (tends to make them look blue), but it's perfect for a pesky zitty zit zit.

One more thing:  obviously, this product comes in multiple shades.  They are named by numbers (1,2,3,etc. in order of darkness).  Be sure to test on your skin or consult with someone at Sephora or the makeup counter to find your perfect match.  Now go out into the world looking awake and refreshed!

Check out my new little happy.  Two cream concealers on top, and then.....wait for it....a surprise finishing powder on the bottom!

Addendum to the hairspray entry....

To clarify, I'm not pregnant.  After reading my comment about Rachel Zoe and her hairspray habits while 'with child,' I realized it might have been misleading.  No lil' Sammons cooking in this oven yet!

Also, as a side note, my sweet hippie cousin in Portland (that's right, Molly; I called you a hippie.  Love you!) wrote me an email about the dangers of hairspray and other chemicals when used by expectant mothers.  While I have plenty of friends and family who haven't changed their beauty routines and have had healthy kids, Molly is right that I should at least point out that it might not work for everyone.  Here are some links to check out on the topic.  Just to be frank, however, I probably won't be one of those people who chills out on the hairspray and perfume when I'm a mommy-to-be.  I'm just too vain.  But hey, you never know!!

Validation via Bravo TV

So I'm watching The Rachel Zoe Project the other day (OBsessed, by the way), and there's a segment of the show where she's having her hair guy perfect her 'do.  What does he pull out and spray all over her locks?  L'Oreal Elnett hairspray!  I also thought it was hilarious (and possibly perfect foreshadowing of my future) when her husband begs her to stop using it while pregnant.  As a woman after my own heart, she refuses to give up her beauty must-have.  I mean, pregnant women have been dousing their hair in chemicals for years; how bad can it be??

Anywho, shout out to my mom for introducing me to this product years ago, and now it's practically famous!  I get requests for hairspray recommendations all the time, and I've yet to find one that is better than this miracle in an aerosol can.  You guys know how I roll by now:  I've tried every spray on the market, from grocery store shelves to salon-only buys, and Elnett is my jam.

This product is only available at Target for around $15-20.  I prefer the 'max hold' -- it's not sticky or too strong.  The beauty of this spray is that it gives you a good hold but allows your hair to maintain its natural movement.  You can actually run a brush through it after you spray!  Amazeballs.  Once again, you're all welcome.

Here's a link to buy at Target online --- looks like it's cheaper than in the store!

Everybody Loves a Quickie

Oh, get your minds out of the gutter.  I've gotten quite a few requests for a post about tips for a fast face --- you know, like a makeup shortcut.  Although I love nothing more than a fully made-up face, sometimes I just don't have time to do the whole sha-bang.  Here are the essentials for Meredith's Signature Quickie (you guys are dirty):

1.  Concealer
First, use your concealer brush to swipe on some Well-Rested under your eyes.  Duh.  Next, if you've got some red spots or blemishes, use the same brush and add a dot of concealer to those spots as well.  I like Bare Minerals Bisque, which comes in a ton of shades that you can match to your skin tone.

2.  All-over powder
I know this may sound like sacrilege to some of you, but I'm just not a fan of liquid foundation.  I like a loose powder that gives good coverage.  Use your big kabuki brush to apply all over.

3.  Blush
It's amazing how awake and polished a simple swipe of the blush brush will make you look.  Don't forget this crucial step on Quickie days.

4.  Eye Primer
Remember the Product Whore post about Urban Decay Potion eye primer?  This is where a tinted version of that comes in handy.  Swipe the gold or bronze shimmer onto your lid and use as your "shadow" for the day.  One easy step, and it lasts all day long.

5.  Mascara
Even though it pains me to say it, sometimes I skip out on the entire Dior Trifecta and just go with one coat of Diorshow Blackout on my upper and lower lashes.

6.  Brows
You know me and my brow particulars.  If you've got thin or light brows, you can't skip this step, even if you're in a ginormous hurry.  Use your angled brow brush to apply color to your brows and define them for the finishing touch.

Voila!  You look bright and polished, but not overdone, and only in a few minutes!  Obvi review my fave products if you don't already have them in your collection :)

Gel-Liscious

Product Whore Alert!

I know it's not technically hair- or makeup-related, but gel nail polish is so superfab that I deemed it blog-worthy.

Now don't be alarmed; I'm not talking about old school "gel" nails that are more like acrylics.  Those suckers are terrible for your nails.  I'm talking about no-chip, soak-off gel polish.  This phenomenal invention comes in lots of colors (including clear) and lasts weeks, not days.  I have a standing appointment at my nail salon every other Tuesday, and the color literally does not chip for the entire two weeks (unless you are doing intense manual labor or something)!!  How does it work?  A special UV light is used to "set" the polish and seal it onto your nails.  To remove the polish, your nails are soaked in acetone, and the polish basically lifts off of your nail.

I've tried just about every brand of the stuff, so here's the rundown according to Yours Truly:

OPI Axxium was the first big name to this party.  I love me some OPI regular polish, and now I love me some OPI Axxium.
Pro:  The largest selection of color.  Axxium comes in the best/most popular colors OPI makes, including a ton of glitter shades.  You peeps know how happy I am when you give me some glitter.
Con:  Tends to be a bit thicker than Shellac

Shellac is another big gel polish manufacturer.  It seems a little easier to find salons that use Shellac than the other brands.
Pro:  Goes on very thin and looks exactly like normal polish.  This also makes soak-off easier/shorter.
Con:  Colors are boring.  Hopefully they will jump on the Fun Color train soon, but for now they are heavy on the pinks and neutrals.

Gelish seems to be the hardest to find in salons, though I'm not sure why.  I'm not totally in love with this brand, but I'm not mad at it either.
Pro:  Good color selection (also with great glitters!)
Con:  Goes on the thickest of all 3
Call your nail salon and ask if they offer gel polish, make an appointment, and get yourself a gel manicure.  It's worth it!!

Disclaimer:  Don't try this at home!  Leave it to the professionals.  The polishing process involves 'setting' each layer of gel using UV lights.  Also, definitely, DEFINITELY don't try to peel the polish off yourself --- most of your nail will peel off with it.  Trust me.  I've tried it.  Let the nail peeps soak it off in acetone and use their tools to do the job correctly.

DiorShow-stopper

This product-whore post is going to be dedicated to not just one product, but instead three products that act as one.  I'm talking about the triumverant known as the Diorshow mascara family.

I'm not one of those women who are blessed with long, thick, naturally dark eyelashes.  When I take off my mascara at night, I can be mistaken for one of those OCD folks who pull out their lash and brow hairs.  So when I say I've tried every mascara on the market, I MEAN I've tried every mascara on the market --- crazy expensive brands, drugstore brands, even my precious Bare Minerals version.  After countless test runs of all the that Sephora had to offer, I found the answer to my limp-lashed prayers:  Christian Dior.

The first mascara by Dior was simply called "Diorshow," and it was pretty sweet.  It was smooth and dark, and it seemed to be better than any other mascara I tried.  Then, one seemingly ordinary day, I had one of my "A-Ha Makeup Moments" upon walking into Sephora to pick up some essentials.  (Ok, so my "A-Ha moments might not be tear jerkers or worthy of a couch session with Oprah, but I still consider them pretty important.)  I walked over to the Dior section to pick up my mascara, and low and behold, there was a new addition to the usual display:  Diorshow Blackout.  What was this unknown black tube that stood before me, whose description boasted stage-worthy lashes?  Clearly, I had to find out for myself.  2 words: a. mazing.  Blackout is darker, richer, and makes my lashes even more lucious than its predecessor.

Fast-forward to now, when 2 more must-haves have been added to the Diorshow lineup:  Diorshow Maximizer and Diorshow Unlimited.  The Maximizer is a white basecoat that goes on first (after you curl your lashes, of course) to moisturize and lengthen your lashes.  Don't freak out --- you'll look like Casper when you first apply it.  Next up is the Blackout to volumize and vamp you up, followed by the Unlimited.  Unlimited comes in a skinny tube with a thin wand to define and lengthen your lashes even more, adding the perfect finishing touch and preventing clumps.

...the only time threesomes are acceptable
Yes, it might seem excessive to have a 3-step mascara regimen every day, but I'm not here to teach you people how to shortcut your makeup.  Looking amazeballs takes time and patience, Grasshopper.

(PS: for some ridiculous reason, Sephora.com doesn't sell Diorshow Unlimited.  Click Here to buy it on Dior's website, or grab it next time you swing by your local Sephora)

KeratinWatch: Day 17

So it's been over two weeks, and my hair is still generally a badass.  There are days --- brace yourself --- when I wash it, slap some Moroccan Oil on the ends (let's not forget that little gem), and go to work with wet hair.  By the time I drop my horse-dog at daycare and roll into the store, I've got shiny, straight hair.  I literally thank my hair stylist a few times a week for this miracle that is Keratin.

I love to wavy-curl my hair with an iron every now and then (future blog topic), so I was a tad worried that the Keratin would mess with that process.  Thankfully, it hasn't changed a thing except to make the waves shinier and healthier.

As a side note, a friend of mine who gets regular Keratin told me that some salons offer a "mini" treatment that doesn't cost as much but doesn't last as long.  She tried it once and wasn't happy with the result.  I haven't tried this myself, but I thought I'd let you guys know.

To summarize:  Save up some money.  Get a Keratin treatment.  Become a general badass.

Eyeliner Lineup

I get a ton of questions about eyeliner application, so that will be the topic of today's blog.  You gotta give the people what they want, right?

There really isn't one correct way to apply eyeliner.  It sort of all depends on the look you're going for.  I personally don't prefer a harsh line like the one you get from a gel or liquid liner, but that technique does work for certain looks.  After lots of tests, I've found that a self-sharpening pencil liner with a smudger on the end works best.  Below is my how-to for everyday liner.  We will chat at a later date about special circumstances like extreme cat-eyes, crazy dark liner, etc.

For the lid:
I know it's against conventional practices, but I always apply liner before shadow.  I like the soft, smoky look this technique produces.  Obvi, start with your Urban Decay primer.  Then, draw a thick line with your liner pencil as close to the lash line as possible.  Don't be scured to make a pretty thick line, and don't worry if it's jagged or uneven.  I like to sweep up the ends in the slightest cat-eye for an instant "I'm awake" look.  I mean who couldn't use a little faux eyelift?  Now here comes the important part: use the smudger end of the pencil to go over the line you made.  This will even out the jagged parts and also keep the line from looking too harsh.  Next, apply your shadow (don't worry; we'll discuss this in detail in a later post).  If the line is too faint after the shadow is applied, feel free to go over it with the pencil again to darken it up.

For the bottom lash line:
This is where I really like to keep it soft.  In fact, I don't even use an eyeliner pencil at all on the lower line.  Use a liner brush (see previous post on brushes) and coat with the crease (darkest) color that you used for your eyeshadow.  If you didn't use a crease color, find a relatively dark shadow in the same tonal family as the color on your lids and dip your brush in that --- maybe a bronze, gray, or stone color.  Sweep the brush onto your lower lash line, keeping it pretty thick and smudge-y.  The key here is to give the look of shadow instead of a harsh line.  You can make it as dark or keep it as light as it suits you.

For an extra fancy pop:
Wipe your liner brush clean, and coat it with a bright, high-shine eyeshadow.  I love using either an iridescent gold or silver.  Brush this color onto the inner lash line - the wet (I know.  Gross word.) part of your skin that is actually above your lower lashes.  You might have to tug skin under your eye down a bit to make this part accessible.  This trick will immediately make your eyes seem bigger and brighter.

I know it looks gross, but this is the 'wet' part I'm talking about.

Notes:
- Stay away from brown.  By "brown," I mean straight-up-Clinique-counter BROWN.  True brown isn't flattering on anyone, anytime.  I'm not talking about in clothing or hair color; I'm talking specifically about brown eyeliner.  Don't do it.
- Make sure you choose a liner color that complements the shadows you are using.

Fave product:
Stila Convertible Eye Color (OBSESSED.  I have it in every color.  "Stone" is best because it looks gray when you put it with gray hues and bronze when you put it with bronze hues.)

KeratinWatch: Day 4

Well, it's official: Keratin is my jam. If they asked me to be their spokesperson, I would respond with an enthusiastic "hells yes."  (Not that I know who "they" actually are...I guess I'm just referring to the people who make the treatment....whatev.)

ANYwho, I was finally able to wash my hair, and I can tell a MAJOR difference. Blow-drying took less than 2 minutes, and my hair was 100% straight after. No flat iron needed!! I have seriously cut about 20 minutes from my get-ready time (which nonetheless is still excessive, I'll admit).  Not only have I noticed a difference, but my coworkers all commented on how smooth and healthy my hair looks.  Sa-weet.  Tomorrow I will experiment with a curling iron and see how the new hair takes to it.  Try not to faint with anticipation.

Hate to break it to my husband, but this lil' procedure is going to become part of my routine upkeep. Prepare the bank account.

For Hotlanta ladies, inquire about Keratin from Jon David Salon. Jeremiah is the bee's knees. (404) 524-9241

KeratinWatch: Day 1

Recently I've had a few friends who have had a Keratin treatment, so I decided it was time I tried it for myself.  So what the heck is a Keratin treatment?  It's a process that softens and shines your hair and can last up to 5 or 6 months.   For we gals with a little bit of unruly wave, the treatment straightens that out as well.  Anywho, I've decided to devote an occasional blog to updates about the process and results.  Are you shaking with excitement yet?

Today was my Keratin appointment at my uber fave Atlanta salon, Jon David Salon in Inman Park.  The whole process took just over 3 hours.  First, there is a "toxin-removing" shampoo, followed by the application of the Keratin gel, then the slooooow drying process, and finally the sealing with a special flat iron.  Whew!  After all that, I can't lie:  my hair is crazy shiny and smooth.  My stylist told me that I won't have to flat iron my hair for the next 4 to 5 months, and it should be relatively straight and shiny even if I let it air-dry.

The cons?  Number one is the price.  The treatments range anywhere from $250 to $400.  Yikes.  Also, I have to wait 48 hours to wash my hair.  Holy greaseballs.  On top of that, I can't put anything in my hair --- no ponytail holders, no bobby pins --- nothing that will make a crease while the treatment sets.  Finally, you have to buy special shampoo and conditioner that runs about $30 each.

According to the peeps I know who have done this, the pros definitely outweigh the cons.  Guess only time will tell!

Here's an example of before and after

RIP, Marc and J.Lo

Let's have a quick moment of silence for the dissolution of my style icon's marriage.  Please pray that the stress doesn't take a toll on her hair and makeup.

Thank you.

"Well Rested" - Wear it, love it.

It's that time again --- time to whore myself out to all of those products out there.  My poison this week?  Bare Minerals "Well Rested" under eye brightener.  This Godsend is for everyone, not just us Bare Minerals freaks.  If you don't use any other product from the brand, use "Well Rested."  This powdered perfection comes in a small tub and needs to be applied with a regular concealer brush (those of you who read my blog entry about brushes, good job!).  This is my "I miiiiight have had too much wine last night but need to look awake today" remedy.  Dab the yellowish powder onto the undereye area before finishing with your regular all-over face powder and erase dark circles instantly.  Bare Minerals has somehow formulated the exact color and consistency that does this job flawlessly.  This product is one that people thank me for every time I recommend it.  No joke!  Try it!

Brushes: Let's get serious.

Below is an excerpt from an actual conversation between a friend and me last month:

Friend:  "I got some new eyeshadow.  Can you put it on me?"
Me:  "Fa sho.  Where are your brushes?"
Friend:  "I don't have any."
Me (confused):  "Then what do you use to put on your eyeshadow?"
Friend:  "My finger."
Me:  ---stunned silence---

This little exchange made me realize that there might be some ladies in this world who need some guidance when it comes to makeup brushes.

As excessive as it may sound, every category of makeup needs its own brush.  If you apply a certain kind of makeup with a brush meant for something else, you won't get the optimal effect.  Here is my list of must-haves:

Blush brush:  Needs to be thinner than a face powder brush and very soft and flexible.
Fave product:  Bare Minerals Tapered Blush Brush  Click here to buy online

Kabuki brush:  Strange name, specific purpose.  This brush is short and fat and is ideal for those of us who wear mineral makeup or loose powder.  They provide better coverage than regular brushes and smooth the powder evenly over your face.
Fave product:  Bare Minerals Full Coverage Kabuki Brush  Click here to buy online

Concealer brush:  This small, thin brush can be used for covering up red spots and also to apply undereye concealer.
Fave product:  Bare Minerals Maximum Coverage Concealer Brush  Click here to buy online

All-over eyeshadow brush:  This brush needs to be relatively flat and wide, and the softer the better.  Use this to sweep all-over color onto your entire lid and up to your arch.
Fave product:  Sephora Collection All-Over Shadow Brush  Click here to buy online

Crease brush:  Now this bad boy is important and often gets left out.  Coat this pointed brush with your dark crease color and apply to the crease of your lid for depth.  *Tip:  place the crease brush in the middle of your crease and open your eye halfway --- this will help you find your natural crease.  Then swipe the brush back and forth like a windshield wiper to apply the color.
Fave product:  Trish McEvoy Tapered Blending Brush #29  Click here to buy online

Eyeliner brush:  This super skinny gem is for all you chicas who wear powder liner (which I prefer, because it makes a line that is softer and less harsh than stick or liquid liner).
Fave product:  Bobbi Brown Ultra Fine Eyeliner Brush  Click here to buy online

Eyebrow brush:  Use this rigid, angled brush to apply brow powder to define those suckers.
Fave product:  Bare Minerals Angled Brow Brush  Click here to buy online

Now pretend you're an artist, and use these tools to paint your face!  (Get the pun?  Name of the blog is Face Painting?  I'm so witty.)

Look out! A Moroccan Oil update

I usually would never recommend a product I haven't tried myself, but I feel like I should spread a new Moroccan Oil miracle.  My sister, who has fantastic curly hair, just tried the line's Curl Defining Mousse and swears by it.  My hair stylist (Jon Whittaker of Jon David Salon, for my fellow Atlantans --- LOVE LOVE LOVE), also highly recommends the product for all you curly-haired chicas.  I still love their curl cream, but I'm always open to trying new things.  If you've tried it, let me know what you think.

Things J.Lo has taught me

Last year, I was in denial when a certain judge left American Idol.  I'm not talking about missing Paula and her less-than-sober antics; I'm talking about the black hole that was left in my life with the departure of Kara DioGuardi.  I'm sure you're wondering why I'd miss someone who was such a non-factor in such a huge show.  The reason?  She was my makeup goddess.  She was flawless every episode, and also on every red carpet.  See some fabulous examples below:

What's a girl to do when her makeup muse has left her??  Turns out I didn't have to fret for long.  The answer to my prayers came in an apple-bottomed package called Jennifer Lopez.  The woman is insane (insane in a good way).  Girlfriend can literally pull off just about any look and not look random doing it.

Here are a few of the Commandments handed down to me from Mount Lopez:

1.  Big hair is better.
I know it sounds scary, but don't be afraid to do a little teasing and volumizing.  Big, bouncy curls always look even more voluptuous withe some extra volume.  J.Lo is a pro at letting her luscious locks grab attention with a perfectly blown-out 'do.  Once you've dried and styled your hair, just turn your hair upside down and spray the shiz out of it.  Also, a little teasing hair at the crown of your head doesn't hurt either!
Fave product:  L'Oreal Elnett Satin hairspray for color-treated hair
(only sold at Target)
Ugh.  Amazing.

2.  Glam it up with glitter.
Don't be scured.  When applied sparingly, sparkle is super!  I love it brushed on your lids with some giant fake eyelashes, or even as a thin stroke of a glittery liner.  Of course, don't neglect your cheeks --- brush on an extra shimmery blush for just the right amount of glow.
Fave products:
Bare Minerals shimmer blush in "Vintage Peach"
Bare Minerals face color in "Pure Radiance"
Urban Decay eyeshadow in "Midnight Cowboy"
Urban Decay Heavy Metal glitter liner in any fun shade

3.  Feature one feature at a time.
Mrs. Mark Anthony follows one of my favorite rules of makeup:  make a statement with one feature, and let the rest of your makeup serve as support.  If you're going to do bold lips, keep the eyes simple and easy.  If you're going to go apesh*t on your eyes, swipe on a shiny nude lip gloss.

Bold eyes, nude lip.  Perfect-o.

4.  Don't be afraid of your inner Jenny from the Block.
We all saw the Idol episode when JLo wore the denim jumpsuit that hearkened back to her P. Diddy gun-carrying days.  It wasn't super.  But what did it teach us?  That it's not a bad thing to take risks.  Every now and then, try a new trend.  What's the worst that could happen?  Maybe you and your friends will have a good laugh at your mishap, but at least you won't be known to have boring style!  Hey, I've got a feather extension in my hair right now.  I rest my case.

To be honest, I'm so obsessed with JLo that I could write a book.  Hopefully these few little tidbits will inspire us all to channel our inner glamourpuss and rock out!

How-to of the Week: Bodacious Brows

Eyebrows tend to get left out in the grand scheme of making up.  Brows are the easiest thing in the world to define, and yet so many women neglect them.  If you think about it, they are kind of like the topper on the glorious cake that is your face, so why not pay them some attention?  Here are some tips to consider when accenting those arches:

- Upkeep is key.  This doesn't mean that thinner is better (actually, too thin is a brow sin!!), but it does mean that we need to regularly wax, tweeze, or thread those suckers.  While waxing seems to be the most convenient (and usually the cheapest) way to keep your shape, threading is becoming a popular alternative because it doesn't stretch the skin around your eyes.  Whichever way you decide to go, make sure you go to someone who specializes in hair removal --- not the nail salon peeps, please!!!  Once too much is taken off, there is no turning back.  And p-p-pu-lease, never assume you can shape and tweeze your own.  It always leads to over-tweezed, asymmetrical brows, so don't even try it.

- In between your brow appointments, it is totally fine to tweeze JUST the little baby hairs that pop up.  Don't do anything to change the shape.  A best practice is to bring a mirror and some great tweezers and sit in front of a window.  Natural light doesn't let any of those little hairs hide.

- For those of you like me with dark hair (ok, maybe it's dyed a bit - sue me) and light brows, definition is a must.  You can go one of two routes:  defining with makeup daily, or for our more adventurous friends, dying.

When going the makeup route, I have found that a slanted brow brush and powder color work better than pencils or gels.  Be sure you pick a powder shade that is about a shade darker than your hair color.  Usually, these powders come in colors like blonde, light brown, dark brown, etc.  Dip the slanted brush into the powder, tap it so extra powder comes off, and follow the shape of your brows with the brush.  Concentrate on the center and ends of the brow, since the inside is already thicker and more defined.  Use a brow brush or an old, clean mascara wand to go over the brows and even out the makeup and also to brush the hairs into place.

For you thrill-seekers who want go the dye route, my favorite (and cheapest!) suggestion is a little unconventional: do-it-yourself men's mustache dye!  First, make sure and buy the right shade for you. Similar to the powder shades mentioned above, men's mustache dye comes in light brown, dark brown, red, black, etc.  Follow the instructions --- no jokes, don't keep the dye on longer than suggested --- and voila!  You have defined brows for a few days.

You will be amazed at the difference a clean, defined brow makes.  Even going to the gym or sunbathing at the pool becomes a little more glamorous when you have perfectly polished peeper-toppers :)

Seriously, best brows ever.

Eye heart eye primer.......and of course Sephora.

I love eyeshadow, but I'm an oily mess and get seriously irked when I get a giant crease in my shadow in the middle of the day.  I've tried a bazillion "remedies," but to no avail.  During one of my random Sephora-browsing days (which happen waaaay too often, according to my husband), I stumbled upon a cosmetic gem:  Urban Decay Primer Potion.  Just sweep a tiny bit onto your entire lid with your finger, and then apply your shadow as usual.  No joke --- you will be crease-free for hours and hours.  The best part?  The Potion comes in 4 shades!  I have the original sheer primer and also the gold-toned "Greed."  When I'm in a rush, I just sweep the "Greed" on my lids before a coat of mascara and head out.  You can choose your favorite shade and either wear it alone or use it to give your shadow a fun new hue!

Happy Shopping :)

**A lil' note from me:  Anytime a product I love is available at Sephora, I will let you know.  I prefer buying anything I can from there, because you can sign up for a free "Beauty Insider" card and then rack up points and get superfun prizes.  I'm embarrassed to admit that I have an entire drawer in my bathroom devoted to free (and I use the word "free" loosely) Sephora gifts.  I will say, however, that I've been introduced to lots of fun new products this way!

Thanks a lot, Rachel

Check out the pic below of one of my besties, Rachel, seconds after giving birth to her first child.  I'd say PhotoShop was involved, but this photo came as a text from her husband's iPhone!  If she can look like this after birthing an 8-pound human, we should all be able to look semi-decent going to the grocery in the middle of the day.  Talk about raising the bar for the rest of America's expectant mothers!!!  Ugh :)

Mmmmm.......Moroccanoil

Hello.  My name is Meredith, and I am a product whore.

I'm not ashamed of my addiction, but I've decided it's time to share my current obsessions with the general public.  Right now, I'm all about all things Moroccanoil.  Never heard of this hair phenomenon?  Get ready.  After this, if your hair could send me flowers and a thank-you note, it would.

For years I had extremely curly hair, and then I woke up one day in my early 20's and it was just frizzy and straight-ish.  Naturally, the flat iron became my best friend.  About a year ago, my hair stylist started carrying a product called Moroccanoil.  It is literally a bottle of oil that you work into wet hair before blow-drying.  The stuff changed my life.  It cut down on blow-dry time, got rid of frizz, and now I only have to lightly run the flat iron through.  Just when I thought it couldn't get any better, they came out with an entire Moroccanoil product line!  If you can stomach the $20-25 per bottle price, the shampoo and conditioner are both totally worth it.  Serious.  And for all you curly-headed folks, I haven't forgotten about you.  Moroccanoil makes an amazing curl cream that isn't sticky and gross like gels and mousses can be.

Check out the products and learn more HERE
You can buy them on Amazon or use the Salon Locator on the Moroccanoil site to find a retailer.

Tell me your thoughts after you try it. You're welcome!!!

How-to of the week: Let's talk lips.

Ok so I have to admit --- I used to hate lipstick.  I was all about tons of eye makeup and clear gloss, but I've turned a corner.  I love a bright red lip, and for the summer I'm sort of obsessed with coral.  However, when attempting this trend, keep in mind that there are some important ground rules.  Here are some tips:

FOR ALL BOLD LIPS:
- Start with a good lip moisturizer.  I'm an old-school lip balm gal, and my personal fave is Burt's Bees.
- ALWAYS go easy on the eye makeup when doing a bold lip.  I like a thin line on the top lid, a shimmery, sheer sweep of shadow, and lots of mascara.  Oh and don't neglect the brows.

RED LIPS:
- You need 3 components:  a dark red/brick-colored liner, a deep red matte lipstick, and a rich red gloss.
- Everyone's skin tone is different, so make sure the red you are choosing looks right with yours.  The best way to do this is to swipe it onto the back of your hand and make sure the lipstick tones go well with your skin tone.
- Never line outside of your actual lipline.  Sometimes I even like to put the lipstick on first, then follow the shape of your lip with the liner, and then add the gloss.
- No ifs, ands, or buts about it:  you will get lipstick on your teeth.  Make sure you keep checking for it.

CORAL LIPS:
- No liner needed for this fun summer trend.  Just a matte coral stick and a shiny coral gloss.
- Be careful when choosing corals, just as when choosing reds.  Some skin tones might look best with an orange-y coral, while others will look best with pinkish coral.
